How do I get my LCD tv to display my laptop input?

I have a cable that connects my laptop to the tv. At the computer end it is VGA and tv end I would call it RCA but it is three connectors that are like green blue and red I think. I plugged in to both and put it on the appropriate input selector. Then I extended my desktop to the "second monitor" as I would with any other monitor, but I got nothing. Do I need to plug it in then restart the computer? Or is there another way to connect it that I am missing?

the cable at the TV end is a Component cable, don't forget you select the right source on the tv. I use this a lot on my own laptop to watch films etc and i normally start my laptop with the cable connected. when you go to control panel-display options and select the second screen don't forget to set the right resolution and tell tick the option that you want to extend not copy the screen. after you've done this it should word, it's worth checking that in your BIOS the VGA port is enabled!

Good Luck
