Can I hook-up 2 computers to 1 monitor using a simple DVI cable-splitter?
I'm looking for a cheap temporary fix while my new monitor is on back-order. I don't want to pay for a KVM switch, and I can't find a DVI switchbox (there are plenty of VGA switchboxes, but then I'd have to buy 3 VGA-DVI adapters).
If I just get a DVI cable-splitter (the kind made for hooking-up 2 monitors to 1 computer) and turn it around so that the DVI cables from my two computers both go into the DVI input on my monitor, and only have one computer turned on at a time, will that work?
Right now I'm pulling out and reinserting the DVI cables from the monitor every time I switch computers, but I'm afraid this method may cause excessive wear on the monitor's port.
Neither my monitor nor my computers have VGA ports.
i dont think it will work.. the data from the comp monitor is in an encoded format.. its not just pulses.. the circuit is designed so that the data flows only in one direction.. you cant fit it in any way tat you want.. also i think that one end of the cable will be a male and the other a female.. (usually the male is connected to the comp and female to the monitor)..
the simplest solution is to get a kvm switch.. and i dont think its too expensive.. (unless its for a temporary setup.. you can look for one on ebay though.. probably 15-20$)
